What is an MOT test?

An MOT test is an annual test that ensures your car is roadworthy and safe to drive. It involves dozens of checks on your used car, ranging from fuel and brake systems to mirror checks and lights, seat belts and exhaust system checks.

How long is an MOT valid for?

An MOT is valid for three years from the data of issue for new cars purchased in the last three years. After this, they are valid for 12 months after they expire, so they should be renewed before the date that their validity expires.

How frequently do you need an MOT?

Your vehicle only requires an MOT check once a year. Once we have performed an MOT test on your car, you'll get a test certificate with the date of the test on it and the date of expiry.

What happens if your MOT has lapsed?

You can't drive or park your car on the road if its MOT has expired. If you do, you may be charged a fine. The only exceptions are if you're taking your used car for a pre-arranged MOT test.
